Original intention or story
This idiom is from the book《魚我所欲也 yú wǒ suǒ yù yě》written by 孟子 mèng zǐ (B.C. 372 - B.C.289).

The original meaning is to emphasize that when you can't own for both at the same time, you have to know how to choose.

Through this saying ,孟子 expounded that life is the one he cherished, but there was something more inportant that than life. That's his belief and thought.
