What does 會 mean in Chinese?
In Chinese, 會 ♬ is often used to talk about something someone can do because they learned it. It can also mean “will” when talking about something that will happen.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 會 + Verb | Subject can / will do something |
1. 會 for learned ability
Use 會 ♬ when someone knows how to do something because they learned it, such as speaking a language, driving, or swimming.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我會說中文。 ♬ | I can speak Chinese. |
| 他會開車。 ♬ | He can drive. |
| 她會游泳。 ♬ | She can swim. |
Here, 會 is not about permission. It means the person has the skill.
2. 會 for future events
會 ♬ can also mean “will” when you are talking about something that is expected to happen.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我明天會去公司。 ♬ | I will go to the company tomorrow. |
| 今天晚上會下雨。 ♬ | It will rain tonight. |
When 會 talks about the future, it does not always mean a strong personal plan. It often means something is expected to happen.
3. 可能會: might / may
You can use 可能會 ♬ to say that something might happen.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 他可能會來。 ♬ | He might come. |
| 明天可能會下雨。 ♬ | It might rain tomorrow. |
可能會 is useful when you are not completely sure.
