Where do location words go in Chinese?

In Chinese, location words usually come before the main action. A very common pattern is 在 ♬ + place + verb.

Pattern	Basic meaning
Subject + 在 + Place + Verb	Subject does something at / in a place

This is different from English, where the place often appears after the verb.

1. 在 + place + verb

Use 在 ♬ before a place when you want to say where an action happens.

孩子在公園畫畫。 ♬	The child draws in the park.
志工在社區服務。 ♬	The volunteer serves in the community.

Here, 在公園 and 在社區 come before the main action.

2. Do not place the location after the verb like English

English often says “do something at a place,” but Chinese usually puts the place before the verb.

志工服務在社區。	志工在社區服務。 ♬

The not-natural examples are only for comparison, so they do not need audio.

3. Place can come before the subject

You can also put the place at the beginning of the sentence. This often sets the scene first.

展場裡很多人排隊。 ♬	In the exhibition hall, many people are lining up.
樓下有人等你。 ♬	Someone is waiting for you downstairs.

This order is natural when the place is important information at the start.

4. Use 去 or 到 for movement to a place

When the verb itself means moving toward a place, use words like 去 ♬ or 到 ♬ before the place.

Do not use 在 when the main meaning is movement to a place.

5. With time and place together

When a sentence has both time and place, a useful basic order is subject + time + place + verb.
