What does 了 mean?
了 ♬ is one of the most common grammar markers in Chinese. It can show that an action is completed, that a situation has changed, or that the speaker is talking about a new state.
| Use | Basic meaning |
|---|---|
| Verb + 了 | completed action |
| Sentence + 了 | change of situation / new state |
A key point: 了 is not simply “past tense.” Chinese verbs do not change form for past, present, or future.
1. Verb + 了: completed action
When 了 ♬ comes right after a verb, it often shows that the action is completed.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + Verb + 了 + Object | Subject completed an action |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我交了申請表。 ♬ | I submitted the application form. |
| 他拍了照片。 ♬ | He took a photo. |
Here, 了 focuses on the action being completed.
2. Sentence-final 了: change of situation
When 了 ♬ appears at the end of a sentence, it often shows that the situation has changed or a new state is now true.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Situation + 了 | The situation has changed |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 天亮了。 ♬ | It is getting light now. |
| 電梯到了。 ♬ | The elevator has arrived. |
| 座位滿了。 ♬ | The seats are full now. |
These sentences do not only describe the past. They show a new situation: it is now light, the elevator is now here, or the seats are now full.
3. Verb + 了 + Object + 了
Sometimes a sentence has two 了 ♬ markers. The first one can show completion, and the final one can show a new situation.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + Verb + 了 + Object + 了 | The action is completed, and the situation has changed |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我改了密碼了。 ♬ | I have changed the password now. |
| 她換了座位了。 ♬ | She has changed seats now. |
This pattern often sounds like the speaker is reporting an updated situation.
4. 了 does not always mean past tense
Because 了 ♬ can show change, it can also appear in sentences that are about the present or near future.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 快十點了。 ♬ | It is almost ten o’clock. |
| 我要出發了。 ♬ | I am about to leave. |
These sentences are not simple past tense. They show that a new situation is coming or already true now.
5. Common beginner tip
If a sentence focuses on a completed action, look for Verb + 了. If it focuses on a new situation, look for 了 at the end of the sentence.
| Chinese | English | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| 我交了申請表。 ♬ | I submitted the application form. | Completed action |
| 座位滿了。 ♬ | The seats are full now. | Changed situation |
