Actions in progress in Chinese
To say that an action is happening right now, Chinese often uses 正在 ♬ or 在 ♬ before a verb.
| Word | Basic meaning |
|---|---|
| 正在 ♬ | be doing something right now |
| 在 ♬ | be doing something |
正在 usually makes the “right now” feeling stronger. 在 is shorter and very common in daily conversation.
1. 正在 + Verb: doing something right now
Use 正在 ♬ before a verb when you want to clearly show that the action is happening at this moment.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 正在 + Verb | Subject is doing something right now |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我正在打字。 ♬ | I am typing right now. |
| 她正在洗手。 ♬ | She is washing her hands right now. |
2. 在 + Verb: doing something
在 ♬ can also be used before a verb to show that an action is in progress. It is simple and common.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 在 + Verb | Subject is doing something |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 他在等朋友。 ♬ | He is waiting for a friend. |
| 我們在開會。 ♬ | We are having a meeting. |
In everyday speech, 在 is often enough when the context is clear.
3. 正在 and 在 are often both possible
For many simple sentences, both 正在 and 在 are correct. The difference is usually emphasis.
| Chinese | English | Feeling |
|---|---|---|
| 我正在找資料。 ♬ | I am looking for information right now. | Stronger “right now” feeling |
| 我在找資料。 ♬ | I am looking for information. | Simple and natural |
4. Add 呢 at the end
You may also hear 呢 ♬ at the end of a sentence. It can make the ongoing action sound more conversational.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 我在準備報告呢。 ♬ | I am preparing a report. |
| 他正在整理房間呢。 ♬ | He is organizing his room right now. |
呢 is not required, but it is common in natural spoken Chinese.
