比, 比較, and 更 in comparisons
比 ♬, 比較 ♬, and 更 ♬ are all related to comparison, but they do different jobs.
| Word | Main function | Basic meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 比 ♬ | introduces the comparison target | than |
| 比較 ♬ | shows a relative or mild degree | relatively; rather; more |
| 更 ♬ | shows a stronger increase | even more; more |
The key difference: 比 names what you compare with, 比較 softens or makes a relative judgment, and 更 makes the increase stronger.
1. A 比 B + adjective
Use 比 ♬ to compare A with B. The adjective comes after the comparison phrase.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 比 + B + Adjective | A is more adjective than B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這份摘要比原文短。 ♬ | This summary is shorter than the original text. |
| 線上流程比紙本流程快。 ♬ | The online process is faster than the paper process. |
In Chinese, do not add a separate word like English “more” after 比. The adjective itself carries the comparison.
2. 比較 + adjective: relatively / rather
比較 ♬ can appear before an adjective even when the comparison target is not stated. It often means “relatively” or “rather.”
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 比較 + Adjective | Subject is relatively / rather adjective |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這個說法比較委婉。 ♬ | This wording is relatively indirect. |
| 這項規定比較嚴格。 ♬ | This rule is rather strict. |
比較 often sounds less absolute than a direct adjective. It can make feedback sound more careful.
3. A 比 B 比較 + adjective
You may also use 比較 inside a 比 sentence. This often makes the comparison sound softer or more conversational.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 比 + B + 比較 + Adjective | A is relatively more adjective than B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 新版介面比舊版介面比較直覺。 ♬ | The new interface is relatively more intuitive than the old one. |
| 這個選項比另一個選項比較保守。 ♬ | This option is relatively more conservative than the other one. |
In many cases, the shorter form without 比較 is also natural: 新版介面比舊版介面直覺。
4. 更 + adjective: even more
更 ♬ shows a stronger increase. It often means “even more” or “more than before.”
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 更 + Adjective | Subject is even more adjective |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 調整後,版面更清爽。 ♬ | After the adjustment, the layout is cleaner. |
| 加上圖表後,報告更完整。 ♬ | After adding charts, the report is more complete. |
更 usually needs an understood comparison: before vs. after, one option vs. another, or one degree vs. a higher degree.
5. A 比 B 更 + adjective
Use A 比 B 更 + adjective when you want a clear and stronger comparison.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 比 + B + 更 + Adjective | A is even more adjective than B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這份資料比上一版更詳細。 ♬ | This material is more detailed than the previous version. |
| 這種說明比文字說明更直接。 ♬ | This kind of explanation is more direct than a text explanation. |
Compared with 比較, 更 makes the increase feel clearer and stronger.
6. 比較 vs. 更
比較 can sound mild, relative, or careful. 更 sounds like the degree clearly goes higher.
| Chinese | English | Feeling |
|---|---|---|
| 這個說法比較委婉。 ♬ | This wording is relatively indirect. | mild or careful |
| 這個說法更委婉。 ♬ | This wording is even more indirect. | stronger increase |
| 新版介面比舊版介面比較直覺。 ♬ | The new interface is relatively more intuitive than the old one. | softer comparison |
| 新版介面比舊版介面更直覺。 ♬ | The new interface is even more intuitive than the old one. | stronger comparison |
Use 比較 when you want a softer judgment. Use 更 when the improvement or difference is more obvious.
7. Common beginner mistakes
Do not copy English comparison order directly. In Chinese, the adjective usually comes after the 比 phrase.
