Using 沒有 for “not as...as”
In Chinese, 沒有 ♬ can be used in comparisons to mean “not as...as.” This is different from 沒有 meaning “do not have” or “there is no.”
| Pattern | Basic meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 沒有 + B + Adjective | A is not as adjective as B |
This pattern compares two people, things, places, or situations and says that A has a lower degree than B.
1. A 沒有 B + adjective
Use A 沒有 B + adjective when A does not reach B’s level in some quality.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 沒有 + B + Adjective | A is not as adjective as B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這份摘要沒有原文詳細。 ♬ | This summary is not as detailed as the original text. |
| 新版介面沒有舊版介面直覺。 ♬ | The new interface is not as intuitive as the old interface. |
The adjective comes after B. Do not put the adjective before 沒有.
2. 沒有 vs. 比
比 says that A is more adjective than B. 沒有 says that A is not as adjective as B.
| Chinese | English | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| 這份摘要比原文短。 ♬ | This summary is shorter than the original text. | A is higher in the adjective |
| 這份摘要沒有原文詳細。 ♬ | This summary is not as detailed as the original text. | A is lower in the adjective |
Both patterns compare A and B, but the direction of the comparison is different.
3. 沒有那麼 + adjective
When the comparison target is already clear, you can use 沒有那麼 ♬ + adjective. It means “not that...” or “not as...as expected.”

| Chinese | English |
|---|---|

沒有那麼 often responds to an expectation. The speaker suggests that the degree is lower than someone thought.
4. 沒有這麼 and 沒有那麼
這麼 ♬ points to a degree close to the speaker or current situation. 那麼 ♬ points to a degree already mentioned, expected, or farther from the speaker.
| Expression | Basic meaning | Feeling |
|---|---|---|
| 沒有這麼 ♬ + Adjective | not this adjective | compared with the current example |
| 沒有那麼 ♬ + Adjective | not that adjective | compared with expectation or previous mention |
| Chinese | English |

| Chinese | English | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 這個表格沒有頁碼。 ♬ | This form has no page numbers. | possession / existence |
| 這個表格沒有範例清楚。 ♬ | This form is not as clear as the example. | comparison |

| 新版介面不直覺像舊版。 | 新版介面沒有舊版介面直覺。 ♬ |
The not-natural examples are only for comparison, so they do not need audio.
8. A useful intermediate pattern: 沒有想像中...
沒有想像中 ♬ + adjective means “not as...as imagined.” It is common in natural speech and writing.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subject + 沒有想像中 + Adjective | Subject is not as adjective as imagined |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這個任務沒有想像中困難。 ♬ | This task is not as difficult as imagined. |
