What does 一樣 mean?
一樣 ♬ means “the same” or “alike.” It can be used by itself, or with 跟 ♬ to say “the same as.”
| Expression | Basic meaning | Main use |
|---|---|---|
| 一樣 ♬ | the same; alike | two things are the same |
| 跟…一樣 ♬ | the same as... | compare A with B |
For intermediate learners, the key point is that 一樣 can describe sameness directly, while 跟…一樣 clearly names the comparison target.
1. A 和 B 一樣
Use A 和 B 一樣 or A 跟 B 一樣 when two things are the same in the context.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 和 / 跟 + B + 一樣 | A is the same as B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 新版介面跟舊版介面一樣。 ♬ | The new interface is the same as the old interface. |
| 這份摘要和原文一樣。 ♬ | This summary is the same as the original text. |
This sentence only says the two things are the same. If you want to say the same in what way, add an adjective or phrase after 一樣.
2. 跟…一樣 + adjective
To say “as adjective as,” put the adjective after 一樣.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 跟 + B + 一樣 + Adjective | A is as adjective as B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這個流程跟上一版一樣複雜。 ♬ | This process is as complicated as the previous version. |
| 這家分店跟總店一樣安靜。 ♬ | This branch is as quiet as the main store. |
In this pattern, 一樣 comes before the adjective. Do not put the adjective before 一樣.
3. 一樣 + adjective without naming B
When the comparison target is clear from context, you can use 一樣 + adjective without saying 跟 B again.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 兩個版本一樣穩定。 ♬ | The two versions are equally stable. |
| 這兩個選項一樣保守。 ♬ | These two options are equally conservative. |
This use focuses on equal degree. The two things being compared are already mentioned in the subject.
4. 跟…一樣 + verb phrase
跟…一樣 can also come before a verb phrase. This means someone or something does something in the same way, or has the same tendency.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A + 跟 + B + 一樣 + Verb phrase | A does something the same as B |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 他跟主管一樣重視細節。 ♬ | He values details just like the manager does. |
| 這個系統跟舊系統一樣需要登入。 ♬ | This system requires login just like the old system. |
This use is common when comparing habits, requirements, preferences, or behavior.
5. 不一樣: not the same
The negative form is 不一樣 ♬, meaning “not the same” or “different.”
| Expression | Basic meaning |
|---|---|
| 不一樣 ♬ | not the same; different |
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這兩份資料不一樣。 ♬ | These two materials are different. |
| 實際結果跟預期不一樣。 ♬ | The actual result is different from the expectation. |
Use 不一樣 when the focus is difference, not lower or higher degree.
6. 一樣 vs. 沒有
一樣 means equal degree. 沒有 in comparison means “not as...as.”
| Chinese | English | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 這份摘要跟原文一樣詳細。 ♬ | This summary is as detailed as the original text. | same degree |
| 這份摘要沒有原文詳細。 ♬ | This summary is not as detailed as the original text. | lower degree |
Use 一樣 for equality. Use 沒有 when A does not reach B’s level.
7. Common mistakes
Do not copy English “same with” word order directly. In Chinese, the comparison target comes between 跟 and 一樣.
| Not natural | Natural Chinese |
|---|---|
| 新版介面一樣跟舊版介面。 | 新版介面跟舊版介面一樣。 ♬ |
| 這個流程複雜一樣上一版。 | 這個流程跟上一版一樣複雜。 ♬ |
| 這兩份資料沒一樣。 | 這兩份資料不一樣。 ♬ |
The not-natural examples are only for comparison, so they do not need audio.
8. A useful pattern: 跟以前一樣
跟以前一樣 ♬ means “the same as before.” You can add an adjective or verb phrase after it.
| Chinese | English |
|---|---|
| 這個規定跟以前一樣嚴格。 ♬ | This rule is as strict as before. |
| 這個入口跟以前一樣需要證件。 ♬ | This entrance still requires ID, the same as before. |
This pattern is useful when comparing the current situation with the past.
