What is the difference between 不 bù and 沒 méi?
「不 bù」and「沒 méi」are both used to make negative sentences in Chinese, but they are not used in the same way.
For beginners, the most useful rule is:
- 不 bù: used for habits, choices, opinions, future actions, adjectives, and states.
- 沒 méi / 沒有 méiyǒu: used for actions that did not happen, things that have not happened yet, and things someone does not have.
In this lesson, we will learn the most common patterns step by step.
1. 沒 méi / 沒有 méiyǒu: an action did not happen
Use「沒」or「沒有」before a verb to say that an action did not happen.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 沒 / 沒有 + Verb | did not do something / have not done something |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我沒去。 ♬ | wǒ méi qù | I did not go. |
| 我沒有說話。 ♬ | wǒ méiyǒu shuōhuà | I did not speak. |
| 他昨天沒來。 ♬ | tā zuótiān méi lái | He did not come yesterday. |
「沒」is shorter and very common in daily speech.「沒有」is also common and sounds a little fuller.
2. 沒 méi / 沒有 méiyǒu: not have
「沒」and「沒有」can also mean “do not have.” In this use, they come before a noun.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 沒 / 沒有 + Noun | do not have something |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我沒筆。 ♬ | wǒ méi bǐ | I do not have a pen. |
| 我沒有妹妹。 ♬ | wǒ méiyǒu mèimei | I do not have a younger sister. |
| 他沒有時間。 ♬ | tā méiyǒu shíjiān | He does not have time. |
Do not use「不有」to mean “do not have.” Say「沒有」instead.
3. 不 bù: negative habit, choice, or future action
Use「不」before a verb when you talk about a habit, choice, refusal, or something that will not happen.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不 + Verb | do not / will not / choose not to |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不學。 ♬ | wǒ bù xué | I do not study it. / I will not learn it. |
| 我不去。 ♬ | wǒ bù qù | I am not going. / I will not go. |
| 我不吃牛肉。 ♬ | wǒ bù chī niúròu | I do not eat beef. |
Compare「不去」and「沒去」:
| Chinese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 我不去。 ♬ | I am not going. / I will not go. |
| 我沒去。 ♬ | I did not go. |
4. 不 bù + adjective or state
Use「不」before adjectives or state words to make them negative.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不 + Adjective / State | not adjective / not in that state |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 中文不難。 ♬ | Zhōngwén bù nán | Chinese is not difficult. |
| 中文不難學。 ♬ | Zhōngwén bù nán xué | Chinese is not difficult to learn. |
| 我不累。 ♬ | wǒ bú lèi | I am not tired. |
Note:「不」is pronounced「bú」before a fourth-tone word, such as「累 lèi」. That is a tone-change rule.
5. 不想 bù xiǎng: do not want to
Use「不想」to say that you do not want to do something. It sounds like a personal feeling or preference.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不想 + Verb | do not want to do something |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不想去。 ♬ | wǒ bù xiǎng qù | I do not want to go. |
| 我今天不想說話。 ♬ | wǒ jīntiān bù xiǎng shuōhuà | I do not want to talk today. |
6. 不要 bú yào: do not want / do not
「不要」can mean “do not want,” but it can also be used to reject something or tell someone not to do something.
| Usage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 我不要... | I do not want... |
| 不要 + Verb | Do not do something. |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不要去。 ♬ | wǒ bú yào qù | I do not want to go. |
| 不要亂說。 ♬ | bú yào luàn shuō | Do not talk nonsense. / Do not say random things. |
「不要」can sound stronger than「不想」because it can express refusal or prohibition.
7. 不會 bú huì: cannot / will not
「不會」has two common meanings. It can mean “do not know how to,” or it can mean “will not.”
| Usage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不會 + skill/action | do not know how to do something |
| 不會 + future action | will not do something |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不會游泳。 ♬ | wǒ bú huì yóuyǒng | I do not know how to swim. |
| 我不會去。 ♬ | wǒ bú huì qù | I will not go. |
In some contexts,「我不去」and「我不會去」can both mean “I will not go.”「我不會去」often sounds more like a prediction or firm expectation.
8. 不能 bù néng: cannot / not allowed to
Use「不能」when something is not possible, not allowed, or cannot be done because of a situation or rule.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不能 + Verb | cannot / must not / not allowed to |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不能去。 ♬ | wǒ bù néng qù | I cannot go. / I am not able to go. |
| 這裡不能抽菸。 ♬ | zhèlǐ bù néng chōuyān | You cannot smoke here. / Smoking is not allowed here. |
「不能」can also mean “impossible” depending on context.
9. 不是 bú shì: is not / not correct
Use「不是」to say that something is not something, or that a statement is not correct.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 不是 + Noun | is not a noun |
| 不是 + Description | not really / not exactly |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我不是學生。 ♬ | wǒ bú shì xuéshēng | I am not a student. |
| 我不是很漂亮。 ♬ | wǒ bú shì hěn piàoliang | I am not very pretty. / I am not exactly pretty. |
「不是很 + adjective」often softens the negative meaning. It can mean “not very” or “not really.”
10. 還沒 hái méi: not yet
Use「還沒」to say that something has not happened yet.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 還沒 + Verb | have not done something yet |
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我還沒做。 ♬ | wǒ hái méi zuò | I have not done it yet. |
| 他還沒來。 ♬ | tā hái méi lái | He has not come yet. |
「還沒」focuses on an action that has not happened up to now.
11. 還不 hái bù: still not / why still not?
「還不」can have more than one meaning. In normal statements, it can mean “still not.”

|---|---|---|
| 我還不吃。 ♬ | wǒ hái bù chī | I am still not eating now. |
| 我還不想去。 ♬ | wǒ hái bù xiǎng qù | I still do not want to go. |
But in commands or complaints,「還不」can push someone to do something. It often means “Why haven’t you done it yet? Do it now!”
| Chinese | Pinyin | Natural English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 你還不去拿! ♬ | nǐ hái bú qù ná | Go get it now! / Why haven’t you gone to get it yet? |
