What is Pinyin?
Pinyin is a system for writing Mandarin Chinese pronunciation with the Latin alphabet. It helps learners read and pronounce Chinese sounds.
A basic Mandarin syllable usually has three parts: an initial, a final, and a tone.
| Part | Basic meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Initial | the beginning consonant sound | m |
| Final | the vowel or ending sound | a |
| Tone | the pitch pattern | mā |
1. Initials: the beginning sound
The initial is usually the consonant sound at the beginning of a syllable. For example, in 媽 ♬, the Pinyin is mā. The initial is m.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Initial | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 媽 ♬ | mā | m | mom |
| 爸 ♬ | bà | b | dad |
| 書 ♬ | shū | sh | book |
Some initials are written with one letter, such as m and b. Some are written with two letters, such as sh, zh, and ch.
2. Finals: the vowel or ending sound
The final is the vowel or ending part of the syllable. In 媽, the Pinyin is mā. The final is a.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Final | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 媽 ♬ | mā | a | mom |
| 茶 ♬ | chá | a | tea |
| 水 ♬ | shuǐ | ui | water |
Finals can be simple, like a or u, or longer, like ai, ang, and iao.
3. Initial + final + tone
A full Pinyin syllable usually combines an initial, a final, and a tone mark.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Initial | Final | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 媽 ♬ | mā | m | a | first tone |
| 茶 ♬ | chá | ch | a | second tone |
| 馬 ♬ | mǎ | m | a | third tone |
| 爸 ♬ | bà | b | a | fourth tone |
The initial and final show the sound shape. The tone mark shows the pitch.
4. Some syllables have no initial
Some Mandarin syllables start directly with a final. In that case, there is no consonant initial.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Initial | Final | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 愛 ♬ | ài | none | ai | to love |
| 餓 ♬ | è | none | e | hungry |
Even when there is no initial, the syllable still has a final and a tone.
5. Pinyin spelling is not exactly English spelling
Pinyin uses the Latin alphabet, but the letters do not always sound like English. For example, q, x, and zh are Pinyin sounds that need practice.
| Pinyin | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| q | 七 ♬ | seven |
| x | 西 ♬ | west |
| zh | 紙 ♬ | paper |
Do not guess Pinyin pronunciation only from English spelling. Listen to real audio and copy the sound.
6. Practice with simple words first
At the beginner level, start with short and common words. First hear the whole word, then notice the initial, final, and tone.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Parts | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 你好 ♬ | nǐ hǎo | n + i, h + ao | hello |
| 謝謝 ♬ | xièxie | x + ie, x + ie | thank you |
Pinyin is a pronunciation tool. It helps you read sounds, but the final goal is to recognize and pronounce real Chinese words.
