Both「二 èr、兩[两] liǎng」means "2".
There are many people who confuse about the difference.Therefore, I point out the difference below, and list out the advanced way to use them.
Difference of「2、二 èr、兩 liǎng」
Rule 1「二 èr、兩 liǎng」can be used for numbers or in front of measure word.
But the usage is slightly different.
Rule 2
If 「2」is used for numbers or serial numbers
It should be read as 「二 èr」.
Rule 3
If 「2」is in front of number unit, like
「百 bǎi」、「千 qiān」、「万 wàn」、「亿 yì」、「兆 zhào」.
It's usually be read as 「兩 liǎng」.
Rule 4
If「22」is in front of number unit, like
「百 bǎi」、「千 qiān」、「万 wàn」、「亿 yì」、「兆 zhào」.
It's usually be read as 「二十二 èr shí èr」
Rule 5
If 「2」is in front of measure word or some of nouns which can be used as measure words.
It's usually be read as「兩 liǎng」.
e.g. 「兩年 liǎng nián (2 years )」、「兩岁liǎng suì (2 years old)」

2 persons；兩個[个]人；liǎng gè rén

「2」 is in front of nouns which can be used as measure words,so reading as 「liǎng」.

2 months；兩個月；liǎng gè yuè
「2」 is in front of nouns which can be used as measure words,so reading as 「liǎng」.
