How do you say “most” in Chinese?

In Chinese,「最 zuì」means “most” or “-est.”

It is used before adjectives or some verbs to show the highest degree.

For beginners, remember these common patterns:

  • 最 + adjective: the most adjective / adjective-est
  • 是最 + adjective + 的: is the most adjective one
  • 最 + feeling verb: like the most, hate the most, want to do the most

1. 最 zuì + adjective

Use「最」before an adjective to mean “the most” or “-est.”

Pattern Meaning
最 + Adjective the most adjective / adjective-est
Chinese Pinyin English
小明最帥。 Xiǎomíng zuì shuài Xiaoming is the most handsome.
這個最便宜。 zhège zuì piányí This one is the cheapest.
今天最熱。 jīntiān zuì rè Today is the hottest.

「最」is placed before the adjective. Do not put「最」after the adjective.

2. 是最...的: the most adjective one

You can use「是最……的」to make the sentence sound more complete or emphatic.

Pattern Meaning
Subject + 是 + 最 + Adjective + 的 Subject is the most adjective one.
Chinese Pinyin English

「小明最帥」and「小明是最帥的」are both correct. The second sentence sounds more emphatic and complete.

Chinese Pinyin English
